Feed stock


Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out a range of stock feeding activities for aquaculture, including undertaking observations that relate to the feeding of stock.

The unit applies to individuals who undertake routine tasks in feeding stock by hand and/or with mechanical feeding equipment in an aquaculture setting under the direction of a supervisor.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, food safety, biosecurity and environmental regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace. Licences may be required if operating load-shifting equipment, vehicles or vessels.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Prepare for feeding

1.1 Read the feeding schedule and confirm quantity and feed type with supervisor

1.2 Collect feeding equipment and personal protective equipment, check for serviceability and calibrate feeding equipment if required

1.3 Collect and load required feed into feeding equipment

2. Carry out feeding

2.1 Follow feeding schedule to distribute feed either by hand or mechanical means using safe work practices

2.2 Feed required amount or until response slows down for satiation feed

2.3 Observe and record stock behaviour and environmental conditions

3. Complete post-feeding activities

3.1 Clean work area and dispose of waste materials safely according to workplace procedures

3.2 Check and store equipment, reporting any identified repair requirements to supervisor

3.3 Record relevant data and observations and report any abnormal records to supervisor
